Student Testimonials

I started Arakan not knowing what to expect, but my initial meeting with Keegan put everything at ease. Keegan is an extremely warm, open and personable instructor and is a significant part of why I've continued to practice Arakan. I get a lot out of training with Keegan, where I've enjoyed learning new skills and improving my fitness in each lesson.

My Arakan instructor left (retired?) to pursue another career. I took a short break from training that turned into a really long one – like two years long. Keegan called me out of the blue, and his energy was so infectious he had me hitting pads within a week. We’ve been training together for a couple of years now, despite my moving overseas a year ago. Keegan adapted to Zoom lessons so smoothly I feel like he’s right there in my garage. Training with Keegan has positively influenced my fitness, mental health, and confidence.

I am a senior aged student in my 70’s. Keegan is my instructor, he is patient thorough and encouraging. Arakan is helping me to keep fit and active. I feel a lot more confident in my ability to defend myself if the situation ever arose.

Peter Boyle

Keegan is a talented and professional instructor who has practiced Arakan for a long time. His lessons focus greatly on technique and fitness. He is very particular when it comes to speed and accuracy of the techniques. Whenever I am not able to do a technique properly, Keegan is very patient and willing to demonstrate multiple times until I fully understand it. Apart from that, Keegan is also a strict instructor, he would not teach me a new skill if he is not 100% satisfied with my current skills. For fitness training, Keegan focuses on building up a strong core and legs. He likes to record the students’ progress and always push them to their maximum capability.  Apart from training, Keegan is a good friend with a good heart. Always willing to help out when a student needs a hand in life and he likes to organise social events after class. I feel very lucky I can have Keegan as my coach and I strongly recommend him to other students.

Keegan has been my primary instructor since I started my journey with Arakan. He is a very patient and enthusiastic trainer. It’s very much obvious how much he enjoys teaching Arakan and why he is such a great teacher.

I have ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and several other mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and I have a very hard time focusing, coordinating and constantly having times where I stop to process everything going on and Keegan is extremely patient and very encouraging. Keegan keeps pushing me to do my best every lesson, even when I'm struggling with my autism or not feeling the greatest mentally. He is soft spoken and easy going, which makes it easier on my anxiety. He is overall an amazing instructor, I'm very lucky Keegan got to be my instructor and couldn't be happier :)

My son Deklan is a naturally kind and gentle boy, who as an only child has never had to endure the competition and ruff and tumble of other siblings. Reading how daunting and challenging schools can be these days I was very keen to get him involved in self defense but wasn’t sure what was going to be the best fit for him.

In a chance encounter at a community fate we saw the Arakan stand and after talking to the guys I was really impressed with how friendly the team was and how passionate they were to get Deklan into his first lesson. And here is the part that grabbed me the most, the training is done outdoors in parks and school grounds while wearing shirts and shorts and everyday shoes, now that’s real life training. We booked in straight away for our complimentary lesson and Deklan couldn’t wait to get started.

On the day of his first lesson Deklan was quite nervous but Ryan his instructor made him feel completely relaxed and the lesson was a great mix of training and learning through fun games. At the end of the lesson Deklan ran straight up to me and asked if he could do more training tomorrow and the next day, which was a sure sign he loved it. He has now been training for over 3 years and as much as Arakan is about learning self defense and getting fit I have seen Deklan grow in confidence, co-ordination, self respect and self belief.

Deklan now jumps at every opportunity to do extra lessons and group training and he totally loves going to school holiday training days and he wears his Arakan uniform with absolute pride.

I can honestly say I have been totally impressed with how Arakan has taught him practical, useable skills in real life environments and we look forward to many more years involvement with the Arakan family.
